Venuso in the news! Fairfax School marks 60th anniversary with a special painting

It’s been a busy time here at Venuso Art. I’m excited to share a new project with you, which is even more exciting because I’ve been featured in the Royal Sutton Coldfield Observer, the Birmingham Mail and the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce as a result!

Here’s more about the project with Fairfax School and how it came about…

An introduction to Fairfax School

I met with a gentleman who works at Fairfax School and he mentioned that the school’s 60th anniversary is coming up. He asked what I thought about the idea of painting a portrait of the founder and former headteacher, Gordon Philpott. I thought it was a wonderful idea (and what a coincidence that we met just at this time!). The idea was later approved.

Fairfax School is a highly regarded secondary school with academy status based in the Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham. Without the vision, hard work and dedication of Gordon the school, established in 1959, wouldn’t exist today. To be involved in marking the anniversary is a huge honour.

Visiting Fairfax School

I visited the school (an amazing building – I was mesmerised) and met Neil, his mother and Mr Philpott’s daughter-in-law, Kath. The first job was an important one – to choose the photo I’d use as my reference for the painting. Kath kindly brought along a selection and a photo was chosen. It’s been decided that Neil will see the painting as it progresses, but Kath won’t see it until the big reveal so it’ll be a complete surprise.

The painting process begins

I usually have both black and white and colour versions of the photo I’m going to use, but in this case I only have a black and white version. This creates a bit of a challenge in terms of getting the colours right on the painting, so to get around that I’ve got a different photo (in colour) which I’ll use as my inspiration instead. No problem!

The anniversary event takes place on the 27th September, so there’s no time to lose. Visitors, including former pupils, will be coming from all over the world to celebrate the occasion where the painting will be unveiled by Neil, Mr Philpott’s grandson. No pressure!

I’ll make another visit to the school before the event to see where the painting will be displayed so I can choose a frame that matches the surroundings. It’s going to be there for many years to come so it’s got to look just right.

All will be revealed – watch this space!

If you’d like a portrait to mark a special occasion – whether it’s an anniversary, a big birthday, retirement, a promotion or something else – please get in touch.
